There is a specific kind of sadness that comes from forgetting a wine. Not the label — you can look that up. The feeling. The table. The light. The person across from you who said, "try this," and suddenly the whole evening shifted. That wine. The one you have been trying to find ever since.

Terroir started as a personal frustration with exactly that. Notes apps full of half-remembered producers. Photos of labels with no context. A mental archive of great evenings that was slowly dissolving. The tools that existed were built for collectors or critics — not for someone who just loves wine and wants to hold onto it.

The Idea

The idea was simple: build a wine companion that feels as personal as the drink itself. Not a database to consult. Not a rating system to contribute to. Something more like a journal — but smarter. A place where your bottle of Burgundy from your sister's wedding sits next to the natural Grenache you found at that tiny bar, and both of them mean something.

Terroir is built around five ideas: what you want to drink tonight, the memories you have made with wine, the bottles you own, the people you drink with, and who you are as a drinker. Everything in the app flows from those five things.

The Name

Terroir is a French word with no perfect English translation. It describes the complete environment in which a wine is made — the soil, the climate, the slope of the land, the hands that tend it. Two wines from the same grape, grown a kilometre apart, can taste entirely different because of terroir. It is the idea that where something comes from shapes what it becomes.

That felt right for an app about wine memory. Your palate is shaped by where you grew up, what you ate, the people who introduced you to things. Your terroir. The app is called Terroir because it believes your wine life is as unique as you are — and worth recording in full.

Built With Intention

Terroir was built to be private by default. Sensitive features — like cycle-aware recommendations — stay on your device and never touch a server. Your tasting notes are yours. Your cellar data is yours. The app earns your trust by not doing anything with your information except making the experience better for you.

It was also built to be beautiful. Wine culture has an aesthetic. The app should too. From the typography to the quiet animations, every detail in Terroir was chosen to feel worthy of what it is keeping track of.

"Wine is personal. Terroir makes it yours."

What Comes Next

Terroir is an ongoing project. The current version covers the essentials — Tonight recommendations, Memory logging, Cellar tracking, Social sharing, and your personal Me profile. Future versions will go deeper into AI-powered recommendations, wine region education, restaurant mode, and more.
