Privacy Policy

Nia Pataj ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Terroir mobile application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use Terroir.

Information We Collect

When you create an account using Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address from the authentication provider. We store this information to identify your account.

We collect information you choose to provide within the app, including:

• Wine memories, ratings, and tasting notes
• Cellar inventory entries
• Taste preferences and sensitivity settings
• Profile information including name, pseudonym, and tagline
• Photos you attach to wine memories
• Cycle start date, if you choose to enable cycle-aware recommendations (see below)

Cycle-Aware Recommendations

Terroir includes an optional feature that uses the start date of your last menstrual cycle to shape wine recommendations. For example, suggesting comfort-focused wines during certain phases. This feature is:

• Entirely optional and off by default. You must explicitly enable it in Settings.
• Based solely on a single date you provide: the start of your last period. We do not collect any other reproductive or health information.
• Used only to personalise wine taste recommendations. No medical claims are made and no health analysis is performed.
• Stored in your account on our servers (Convex), associated with your user ID. It is not shared with any third party, advertiser, or analytics service.
• Deletable at any time by clearing the date in Settings or deleting your account.

This data is classified as sensitive health information. We treat it with the highest level of care and use it for no purpose other than wine recommendation personalisation.

AI-Generated Recommendations

Wine recommendations in the Tonight tab are generated using an AI language model provided by Anthropic (Claude). Your preferences, occasion, and cellar contents are sent to Anthropic's API to generate recommendations. Anthropic's data handling is governed by their Privacy Policy. We do not send your name, email, or health data to Anthropic. Recommendation prompts contain only your stated wine preferences, occasion context, and cellar contents.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information solely to provide and improve the Terroir app. Specifically:

• To identify your account and sync your data across your devices
• To provide personalised wine recommendations based on your stated preferences
• To display your profile to other users if you choose to participate in social features
• To respond to support requests you submit

We Never Sell Your Data

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers or third-party marketing companies. Your wine data is yours.

Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored securely using Convex, a cloud database provider. We use industry-standard encryption in transit and at rest. Authentication is handled by Clerk, which is SOC 2 Type II certified.

Data Retention and Deletion

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time through the app's Me screen or by contacting us at hello@niapataj.com. Deletion is processed within 30 days.

Children's Privacy

Terroir is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
